Ambush from All Sides by Yang Jin
Analyze the work in 1-2 short paragraphs on the blog, discussing the
elements of the work that are derived from noise. What
is the effect of noise on the your understanding of the content of the
piece? How would you characterize the work and why? Does it function as
art, music, or as an environment/space?
This piece is produced all with one instrument, so many of the sounds are very similar, however the "noisiest" sounds come from when the strings are struck very rapidly, producing a flat, twanging sound. This sound is likely an attempt to replicate the loud movement of soldiers, or the general chaos of battle, as the title implies. Even without the title one would get the idea of chaos, as this part of the song is considerably faster than the rest. It's a release of the tension that had been built up until that point. It is quite loud and "noisy" compared to the rest.
This piece functions as musical art, reproducing a particular feeling, but may be meant to set up the environment of a battle.
