Viewing Richard Heipp's 'Seeing Anatomy: Scanning Stylostixis + Self Portrait' was like looking at a body through the lenses of of healer. The painting looks digitally produced; the trickery of material is initially what engaged me. The painting has a minimal color scheme and is reminiscent of a body xray. There are acupunture points on the body and MRI spinal scans overlaid with eyes in the background. This mixture of eastern medicine (acupuncture) and western medicine (MRI) gives a wordly perspective on how different cultures diagnose diseases of the body. The aesthetic of a digital image, with the eyes in the background, makes me think of all the various ways of perception we experience- through our eyes, painting, cameras, xrays, ect. The image made me feel more conscious of my own body and how doctors of different cultures would perceive different diseases.
Bethany Taylor's 'Runoff Verdure' was charged with symbolism and emotional response. There was a tapestry with an image of the Santa Fe river in High Springs, Florida. The piece is portraying the effects of industrial and agriculture runoff in Florida's natural springs. The tapestry was unraveling, symbolic of the unraveling of the ecosystem, and there were wire 2D drawings of animal skeletons. The tapestry makes reference to 16th-18th century European Verdure Tapestries which depicted the forests, lakes, flora and fauna of a region. However, instead of the green showing natural flora, it is showing the effects of increased phosphorus and nitrogen- toxic blue-green algae. This piece is an shocking, yet elegant, response to the environmental tragedies that are occurring.
