- What are the advantages and challenges of representing a story with one image as opposed to multiple images?
When representing a story with one image, the viewer often must have previous background knowledge of the subject to understand everything that is happening in the image. With sequential art, the artist can explain as he/she goes along.
- What is causality?
Causality is a chain of events which leads to a conclusion in a story. One event leads to another and so on.
- Define narrative compression and give an example of a television or online commercial that uses narrative compression.
Narrative compression is a strategy used in making commercials or if a time constraint is necessary. A commercial is maybe 15 seconds long, which is why it is important to effectively communicate a point by being extremely decisive about the sequence and information that you show to the viewer. Any type of trailer for a movie does this.
- What are the six strategies that advertisers use in advertisements to sell us stuff? Provide example/s of commercials that you have recently viewed that illustrate each of these strategies.
Rational- A commercial for ITT technical school explains how easy and straightforward enrollment is.
Emotional- An E-Harmony commercial shows interviews and clips of successful couples to convey garunteed happiness.
Serious-An ASCPA commercial for abused animals.
Humorous- Most commercials during the Superbowl.
Realistic- A commercial for a specific pharmaceutical, it only relates to the people that potentially would need it.
Exaggerated- Gieco Commercials that use a lizard for entertainment to cover up the boringness of insurance.
