Charles Ray's "Rotating Circle"
I find this piece interesting, especially in context with Walter Benjamin's term "petrified unrest" and the idea of the quick and the dead. The circle appears to be motionless, but upon closer inspection is actually rotating very quickly in it's place in the wall. For me this work comments on and questions the limitations which qualify something as alive or dead, in motion or at rest etc. Anything that appears to be still, at a nuclear level, is actually moving, just as anything that appears solid is actually comprised of infinite pieces. The simplicity of the piece allows for more complex thought about these subjects and their apparent contradictions.
