project 4

the vimeo was taken down. so i will be dropping off the other forms to watch the video

Language has always been one of the hardest aspects for me to learn. I have failed at creating an interesting work due to my lack of confidence in the language or I have been unable to understand a class. As one gets to know me they understand that a very interesting characteristic of mine is my use of any language. By text or spoken, I have always make languages mistakes. Every since a young age I have always had to repeat myself, since I tend to have messy thoughts and messy speaking.

For this project I wanted to create the confusion I tend to have when speaking.  I choose a Dr. Seuss story, which contains a great amount of play on wording and repetition.  With this story, which is already a poem and therefore, with a lot of word play, I created a project in which I used my normal and confusing play on word to create a confusion with the audience. I seat in front of the class and create this feeling of a book reading. However, as I read they will hear I am using a confusing grammar.  This is much like when I was a child and I was not able to use the right words or turn the right words in a sentence.  In almost every sentence I created confusion by mixing normal language with my new grammar. I turned worlds around as well as sentences around.  In addition,  I introduced the actual scanned pages of the book. The viewer is then able to compare what I am saying to what the book is intended too say. Therefore, there will be confusion, but there will be an understanding of what is happening.

Reflection

I want to work with the idea of having graphics on the screen while I read to the class. I want to create these graphics as an infographic that contains the story. it will be like the book but my work more than Dr. Seus. In addition, I will be doing this twice. I will read the first time without the graphics and the second time with it

Project drafts

look at the draft HERE

1st. draft, I made a video overlapping me reading and the right text that i was reading wrong
2nd draft, I made a video overlapping the actual graphics of the book. (I would like to either do this or show my own graphic (tying in to my major)
3rd draft, I read a different story however, i did use the same style as the first just a different way to show the font. (reads better but story doesn't)

Performance Project ideas

I have always had a strong disagreement about performance. I do see it as art, however, I always have argued that art is the product of something, and a lot of times it is a product in which we are able to fiscally analyses after. Therefore, most of my ideas tend to create a commentary on leaving something behind or creating a piece that after its performance it is interesting and tangible.  I want to talk about various aspects of everyday life. For instance, I want to talk on the decision making aspect or even the way one is let on by others.
My first idea works on the aspect of everyday commuting. One does not understand the different directions ones take through the day. For instance, when waking up I walk around my bed and fix it then I walk straight to my bathroom and left to the sink. I want to sit in an area occupied by at least three people and record the steps they take through the day. the only difference is that I will be recording these steps in a sheet with string and a needle. If a person goes right I will make a stich to the right, if a person makes a circle I will create a circular stich. Each person will be categorized by a different color and by the end of the day I will be able to show a piece in which the day of a person has been recorded.
Another project would follow the same idea of leaving the mark of communing. However, I will create this work by following the instructions of a random film or song. I will choose a song or film in which the main aspect of it has nothing to do with dancing or instructions. Then I will dissect the film and leave the words like “change”, “Left”, “right”, “Straight”, “side”, “up”, “down”, “back”. I will then follow the instructions of this work and create a work of art with my feet  dipped in paint, mud, dirt or sand. In various classes I have worked on projects in which the teacher tries to send me on a path I do not intend to. She does not fully understand what I am trying to create and therefore, blindly sends me to create a work in which I do not care for. Here I am talking about the idea of getting instructions from something or someone that has nothing to do with the subject and therefore, leaves the artist into an unknown result.
Lastly, something that I always relate to is that when I talk a lot of times I do not make much sense. Much like Shakespeare's writings one has to closely analyze what I say to understand what I mean. I have always had the problem that what I want to say does not really work out and it ends up being a confusing statement. Therefore, I want to take a easily understandable poem or story and switch words around. I will make rules in which I will switch the 5th and 4th word of a sentence; every other sentence will have their words either backwards or the sentence itself backwards. Things like these rules will create a feeling of confusion to a very common and understandable poem/story. I will then stand in front of the audience or camera and recite this new poem/story and let the audience try to understand and decipher what I mean to say.

The Red Tapes Questions

What are the different voices that Acconci uses when speaking in the work and to what means? What characters does he embody/perform?
- thorught the film one follows Acconci as he shows himself in different forms. He is seen as a revolutionary, a ruler, a narrator and even sound effects. He is seen as a revolutionary and a prisoner when his face is shown with a blindfold and he starts talking about the revolution. in some parts of the film he is heard giving commands to his audience, therefore i can connect him to a ruler. In addition, he uses in the beginning and in the end parts in which he narrates a scene. lastly, he gives different sound affects to the film, as in humming or making car, wind or bomb noises.

Locate instances of nationalism as well as lone individuality in the work. What do references to nationalism “do” or emphasize with respect to our understanding of the story.

-  in his work Acconci shows nationalism by using general known aspects. he shows landmarks as well as an American flag. in addition, he repeats words "We are the people" a very understandable idea of a nation, specially the U.S. nation. His references to nationalism lead the audience to connection of everything he talks about as a commentary on nationalism and all of the aspects in bring with it. In addition, he shows lone individuality, when creating a narration or adding stories in which he is seen and he is the only person in the room. He does seem to express his idea of nationalism and as one views him and only him they are able to understand that this is the view of one person as well as many.

How do the formal strategies (the look and how different elements are put together) of video, still  photos, painting, film, and performance contribute to the content of the work? Provide specific examples.

- Acconci uses various strategies to accomplish his work. As it seems to be a commentary and a video somewhat looking like a revolution, Acconci uses aspects like pictures and a black background for his film. These pictures and flags are used as a visual for the audience to connect with. Therefore, by his use of the pictures and the affects he uses between them he is able to connect his ideas even more to his message. for instance, he uses the various pictures of the car to create a somewhat moving image in the mind of the viewer. He makes noises as well as narrates a scene as the camera jumps between the vehicles that are in different positions. These pictures help create a visual to his wording and lets the audience understand his message. In addition, as he did in the beginning and the end, Acconci narrates a chain of actions against a black screen. By not giving the viewer an exact image to imagine he is letting their imagination work and help give a variation of visuals.

- How do you ultimately understand the narrative or story of this work? Please describe.

Since he is giving so many visuals and does not create a fluid story, it is very hard to understand what story is happening. Yes, we understand that he is talking about nationalism, revolutions, and the wars. however, one gets confused in which aspect is he going for. As he makes a joke or even an strong commentary against nationalism in his scenes of explaining a death in a battle or a the bombing of famous historical characters. One does understand the commentary he intends, however, one does not understand a fluid story that follows all of these.

Reflection

on the critique for my Sound project people were very interested on the idea of relaxation through my every day activity of cooking. The idea of having the siziling of the pan and some common sounds was good. however, people were more interested in hearing a lot of different sounds from the kitchen. I will try to record some more sounds, like the sound of placing pan on the stove, the sound of ice and  water being poured on it. also people thought the sound of me eating would add a bit more to the project. I will try to change these small details and be able to tell a story with those sounds.

In-Class Exercise

when one is in complete silence and is concentration on one spot, everything starts to go quiet and almost all the senses start to decrease. As i stared at a person for five minutes i found myself trying to see what they were thinking, what they were doing and if they had to try as hard as i did to keep the concentration on both eyes. I felt aware of my stare, trying to change it and not look as fierce or judgmental.  In addition, i had a strong feeling not to look away but to change the spot in the eyes i was concentrating on. I was aware of my stare as well as the idea of me going into my partners personal space. It was hard, specially to stare directly in the eyes as well as not to blink too much or not tearing from the lack of blinking. however, i did feel a moment of relaxation, i lost sense of my surrounding and became more aware of my partner.

2nd acctivity
it was very interesting how i started to notices the different things that are a harder to make when taken the liberty of lifting the pen up. my hands hurt and i was able to play and notice the differents aspects of types.

Project Numbah 3

What does a common person think when they are told a sound art work is about to be presented? It is a calming sound? Is it an enjoyable sound? Or it is something that will create an uncomfortable feeling? When I am presented with sound projects, I tend to favor that project that creates a sense of relaxation. Sounds like music, or ambiance are sounds that I am happy to listen too. In this project I wanted to play with just that. My project is based on the idea of sharing a relaxing experience. One of the most relaxing activities of my day is making food, specially cooking eggs in the morning. In this piece I try to set a mood and create an ambiance of a morning breakfast. I worked with the sounds of the stove and the different tools used in the creating of my breakfast. I played with these sounds by creating an abstract piece. Although abstract, this piece uses these sounds in the order use. Therefore, one could understand what is going on in the piece, however, they are able to sit back and relax to the different sounds.
I created this project by recording the sounds I create while making my usual morning breakfast. I played with the recordings of eggs cracking, the pan cooking, the vegetables being cut and the other background noises in my apartment in the morning.  By repetition, changing speed, staking and different other affects I was able to create an ambiance in which the listener can sit and relax. This project is meant to be played in a room that completely a different place than a kitchen. It is supposed to bring this ambiance to the listener and as they sit, close their eyes and relax they can hear the cooking, imagine it and even smell it.

In-Class Group Exercise 11/12/14

Reflection

Although people enjoyed the idea of the cooking as something that causes relaxation, a couple of suggestions were given. First, I would add stronger/louder sounds. these sounds will not be something that distracts the listener from relaxing but it will add to the relaxation. for instance, I was encouraged to try and add water to a hot pan or create staking of sounds so it is louder. In addition, To personalize my project a little more, i will add signing or humming that will create an better, personal ambiance.

Draft

Draft:  https://soundcloud.com/tami-moreno/audproj

One of the things I look forward in the art of sound is the fact that I can relax by just listening to most of them. One thing that relaxes me is cooking in the mornings and the sounds it makes. I want to create this feeling of relaxation by using the abstract sounds of cutting, cooking, pouring and eating and creating a relaxing atmosphere.

class assignment

We created the rule that you and a partner will count off 1-5, about five times. The first time you would just count it off. after that each time you will count off you will change a number with an action or sound. the end result should be a count off in which no numbers are actually used.
here is ours
here is Leanne and Alyssa's rules by us

Process

Process

Every morning I wake up and as much work as i have i go through a system of activities. One of those activities is cooking eggs and making coffee. As much work as cooking and cleaning makes, this cooking gives me an escape from the vast amount of work i tend to have. The sounds created by the activities that lead to my breakfast always create a calm and nice ambiance in my almost too silent apartment. therefore, i want to record these sounds, however abstract they may be to create an ambiance in which I can share this experience with and show how my routine goes. I want to work with the idea of staking sounds and making them abstract. I do not want the listener to understand what is happening as soon as they start hearing these sounds, however, i want them to be able to put it together in the end.

Class assignments 10/29

1. Importing sounds
2. Using the Microphone

Project 3 brainstorming and Practice sounds

https://soundcloud.com/tami-moreno/2-sample-sounds

For my project I want to create an environment for my morning routines. I might do the part of getting dressed, brushing my teeth, washing my face and using these sounds abstractly to show my morning routines and something people can relate to. In addition, I was thinking of creating the environment of cooking. something that really calms me down and I do often  is cooking eggs. I have a routine in doing them and I think it will create an interesting piece. I want to  record these sounds and maybe stack them and give them solos to create a piece that is interesting, abstract but specific at the same time.

In Class Asignment

I listen to My Bloody Valentine, Sometimes. As one starts to litsen to the song one hears the base going very rough. It is the most poart of the piece and if put by itself it could be just a piece of  noice. however, since there is a guitar playing in the background and the voices one starts to feel as if it is part of a song and litsen to it as a calming song. the soothing voice in the song repeats the same couple sentences of a couple together. it describes a relaxing and a time one would smile if told. however, it does contain very rough parts of the base agians the calming voice, I hear this piece as melancholy and sad. another part of the song is the guitar which also repeats itself. There are not much of change during the song. Each part of the song repeats the same tones however, as the song continues there pitch of some parts are switched. As I hear this song I View it as a song due to the singing, repeating and rhythm; which are very common parts of songs. Since

Project 2

HOW TO TEAM WORK!

College is the time in which people learn to share. We learn to share clothes, space and even food. When moving to college many do not have much experience with roommates. Therefore, they learn that they cannot get everything they want when living with other people. For instance, a person might end up in a triple or a double and it is really hard and uncomfortable. For everyone to be happy, everyone needs to give up something. If a roommate does not want to contribute, that is when trouble comes. Me and my roommate have had trouble adjusting to living together. Different problems have included the air conditioner, cleaning schedule and organization. We all tried living together but separate, however, we realized we needed each other too. After a very bumpy road we learned how to endure and enjoy living with each other.
In this video I am representing our sharing of space and specially the sharing of a tight space. I used my roommates to represent the bumpy road we have used in the past. I start by showing them all working in the kitchen. Each taking a different task that needs to be completed so everyone else can eat. As they try to accomplish their tasks they get into each others way and push each other around. This represents what did happen at the beginning of the year and how even with these bumps the smiles and friendliness does not leave the character’s face. They do complain and they do still get in the way, however, in the end they get things done and organize the whole kitchen. Which represents, how in the end they did need each other to create the piece, however, they did go thought a bumpy road.
