Process

Process

Every morning I wake up and as much work as i have i go through a system of activities. One of those activities is cooking eggs and making coffee. As much work as cooking and cleaning makes, this cooking gives me an escape from the vast amount of work i tend to have. The sounds created by the activities that lead to my breakfast always create a calm and nice ambiance in my almost too silent apartment. therefore, i want to record these sounds, however abstract they may be to create an ambiance in which I can share this experience with and show how my routine goes. I want to work with the idea of staking sounds and making them abstract. I do not want the listener to understand what is happening as soon as they start hearing these sounds, however, i want them to be able to put it together in the end.

Project 3 Draft concept and sounds (Brianna Palmer)

For this project I intends to record sounds that are normally very quiet or usually disregarded, creating an uncanny or contemplative atmosphere. I want to hint at a space that everyone knows, because these sounds are familiar to everyone, even though we may be trained not to hear them. I like the idea of people trying to decipher what they're hearing, and perhaps not being able to tell because they don't listen enough in their own lives to be able to recognize the sounds readily.
I would like to keep my project relatively quiet, even though the recorded sound will be amplified because of the nature of the recording process. This will create a feeling of things being not quite right, hopefully pushing the audience to try to understand.

When H.P. Lovecraft wrote his stories of unfathomable cosmic horrors and unexplainable, strange goings-on, he was considering the rapid advance of scientific discovery at the time, and how it simply opened up new, and potentially terrifying mysteries about the universe. As more is explained about our world, more things that are unexplained surface in response. What of the possibility of other dimensional planes? Or entities or experiences so incomprehensibly horrifying and out of our range of understanding, that we could go mad just to think of them? Humans like to simplify their world-view as a natural way of living fairly normal lives. If we sat and pondered the mysteries and potential horrors of the universe, we would indeed find living a stable existence quite difficult. Despite our intelligence, the human race has a fragile sense of reality.

I want to explore with this project that sort of otherworldly existence that may be reality somewhere, in another time, and maybe in another univese. The sounds of a different dimensional plane; perhaps one that is incomprehensible to a mere human. Where you can hear the tiniest atom vibrating against its neighbors, or the sounds of the cosmos whooshing through the infinite nothingness. And maybe even the presence of eldritch horrors would create a warping, disturbing mess of foreign noise. This is something of a difficult concept to really convey using simple everyday sounds, so for this project, I'm going to take the sounds I find and warp practically all of them to create something uncannily familiar, but disturbing and very different. My plan is to give listeners a glimpse into a reality somewhat like our own, but nonetheless terrifying to witness.

Reflection on Aram Bartholl Guest lecture (Brianna Palmer)

I really enjoyed Bartholl's talk and work. I thought his artwork was interesting and surprising, because I do not expect people to take those kinds of things seriously enough for professional artist working in the world's to make work about it. I think there's a lot to explore in terms of social and implications and general ideas in virtual spaces, and I'm pleased to see that there is a professional artist who agrees. I really enjoyed his WoW workshop, with the floating name tags, because relevant to me as a person who plays online games where it's beneficial for people to know your username, and who at the same time is very personal and wouldn't be comfortable with everyone knowing my name in "real life".
At the moment, Bartholl's work does not have very much in common with my own, though I hope to someday have the opportunity to make work that explores similar themes. I am very interested in exploring social and intrapersonal topics, and I think doing so with modern technology and popular culture of the time is very appropriate.

Ashley Long - Project Three Idea & Sounds

Project Three

For this project, I'm going to take a variety of annoying sounds - a baby crying, an alarm clock, dogs barking, etc. - and begin with them going at a regular pace, one after another, but eventually becoming more hectic and overlapping. As time goes on, the sounds will become distorted and create a strong sense of discomfort and annoyance as the unpleasant sounds are repeated until a pleasant, quiet sound comes in, most likely of a serene outside area. After a moment or so of this kind of quiet, the nicer versions of the previous sounds - a baby laughing, a coffee maker, a cat purring, etc. - will play one after another until the last sound fades into quiet. This is meant to be representative of how carried away people get with negativity, letting little things become so distorted and awful that it begins to turn into something terrifying and dreadful to hear; a symphony of negativity. But when we take the time to breath and go somewhere quiet and peaceful, we can see the good that overpowers that same negativity.

Project 3 Concept Idea with Sound Links

For Project 3, I am going to create an environment that sounds like outer space and futuristic. The project will include sounds of metallic, beeping, twinkling/tingling, and echoing stuff made from objects I possess and downloaded from the internet. The project will start out gaining tension, with a loud rocket sound that makes the listener feel like they are lifting off into space from a spaceship. Then the tension will drift away as other pleasant sounds start to occur. This will make it seem like the listeners have reached outer space. There will be sounds that represent shooting stars and planets passing by. There will be soothing, cosmic sounds, like the music from Space Mountain at Disney. The project will end pleasantly, creating a sense of immense depth.
